Cow-calf Operation. Horse Sales and Training
Established in 1976
At Big Sky Ranch, we pride ourselves on our high-quality cow calf operation. Our commitment to sustainable ranching practices ensures healthy livestock and a thriving environment for future generations.
Calves are generally sold mid summer on contract for delivery around November 1. Please contact us if you are interested in purchasing feeder calves direct. We generally work with Superior Livestock Auctions, but are willing to work directly with purchasers. Please contact us if you would like more information.
We spend the time to make sure all of our horses have a quality foundation. We don't rush the training to finish a horse and make quick sale. Generally, our horse will spend one to two years being used on the ranch before they are offered for sale. When we feel that the horse has a solid foundation to be a safe and sound companion and tool for getting the job done, they will offered for sale.
Our horses are trained in quality facilities and out in the field working cattle. We put miles on the horses and they are exposed to real ranch life situations. This produces well trained companions that are not only physically conditioned, but settled in their mind.
“Doc,” a 2019 registered AQHA gelding. This horse is proof that dynamite comes in small packages. He’s quick-footed, agile, and has an impressive stop when asked. Doc has tracked the roping sled, been heeled on in the arena, and is a heel horse that’s ready to be used.
Ridden in an O-ring snaffle and tie-down, Doc is soft in the face and responsive under saddle. He’s done ranch work, tracked the Smarty sled, and shown natural cow sense when working cattle—his pedigree shines through in every move. He’s laid-back, eager to please, and gives more when you ask for it.
We plan to haul Doc to jackpots this year and start him in breakaway at the ranch. Whether you’re looking for a solid ranch horse, a rope horse with promise, or a gelding with the mind and talent to go far, Doc is the kind that will keep gaining value with time and miles.
